In 2010 Casterton was one of fourteen small towns/villages across the UK taking part in the British Gas Green Streets challenge, which encouraged communities to work together to save and generate energy. Casterton received the equivalent of £140,000 in goods and services from British Gas to install a range of technologies that helped households both save and generate energy.
Casterton School was gifted solar panels from this award, conditional on the school having charitable status, the data produced by the panels being used for educational purposes and that 50% of the income from the feed-in tariff (FIT) would be given back to the community: the school agreed.
Casterton Community Trust was established in 2014 to manage the income generated by these photovoltaic panels. Twice yearly payments received by the Trust from Sedbergh Prep at Casterton are managed and distributed for the benefit of the community, subject to completing a successful grant application form which can be downloaded from this page. Only one application for consideration may be presented by any one organisation within any grant period.
Casterton has been enhanced as a result of the grants made so far and the trustees encourage residents to suggest projects with broad community benefit.
