Your parish councillors

We are elected or co-opted members of the local community who want to do something positive and aim to make a difference by influencing decisions that affect your village. Parish councillors give their time (they are not paid) to work on your behalf, serving to improve the quality of life and local environment.

The parish council meets several times a year and the minutes of recent meetings are available to view on this website. Minutes are also posted in the Casterton bus shelter (beside Casterton Village Hall) and on the notice board where Colliers Lane meets Gateheads Brow. Please note that these minutes are draft only until approved and signed at the subsequent parish council meeting. The parish council’s role is to represent the interests of the whole community, so residents’ views are important.

Residents can get involved in a number of ways

• Come along to a parish council meeting – it is your right. There is a public participation period at each meeting, where people can bring issues or questions to the parish council’s attention. It is helpful if you email the parish council clerk to let us know you wish to attend.
• Take time to read the parish council minutes to find out what is covered at the meetings.

The next meeting will be on Thursday 3rd September 2026 in Casterton Village Hall starting at 19:00.

There will be public participation at the beginning of the meeting, where people can bring issues or questions to the Parish Council’s attention. It is helpful if you email the Parish Council clerk to let us know you wish to attend.

Planning

The planning authority for Casterton is the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA). The parish council is a statutory consultee for planning purposes, which means it automatically receives from YDNPA details of all planning applications in the parish.

Your councillors have to study each plan received and, if they believe that, by virtue of the design, setting, scale etc., the result would be detrimental to the community, then they can make a written objection. They can also support an application, or simply make a relevant comment.

The planning officer dealing with an application has the authority to make a decision to approve or reject those which are relatively minor or uncontroversial. More substantial or complex proposals may be considered at the regular YDNPA Planning committee, to which the planning officer will make a recommendation, but which is not binding on the committee.

Parish council’s views are given due consideration, and for example any plan where the parish council’s view is different from that of the planning officer may have to go to committee for a decision.

Residents can address their observations about any application to the parish council to take into account when they are forming their view.
