D-day beacon lighting

On Thursday 6th June a hardy bunch of Casterton residents made their way up Brownthwaite, undeterred by the unseasonably cold weather and showers, to watch the lighting of the beacon, organised by Casterton Parish Council.

The Casterton beacon was one of more than 1,000 beacons lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and UK Overseas Territories to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, and to pay tribute to those who contributed to the liberation of north-west Europe from Nazi occupation.

Many thanks to everyone who helped to make this event happen and to those who watched, on Brownthwaite or from the village, and especially to those who donated to Help for Heroes.

delphiniums in one of the open gardensOn Sunday 9th June, the Casterton Village Hall Committee arranged an Open Gardens event at which eight of Casterton’s gardens were opened to the public. More than 100 people, some local and some from further afield, walked round the gardens and enjoyed tea and cake in the Village Hall, raising an impressive £634, which will be split between the Village Hall and the Royal British Legion.

Thank you to everyone who opened their gardens, made cake, served tea and coffee and sold ice creams and garden maps.

Events in the village hall will take a break over the summer months, but will be back in the autumn with more quizzes, talks by fascinating local speakers, and another Highlights event (details to be announced shortly).
