David Pelter’s talk at Casterton Village Hall on 30th January, ‘Making a Difference in Lutherie’ was an unqualified success. The evening began with convivial conversation over tea and biscuits, and the numbers in the hall began to swell.
By the time the talk started at 7.30 it was literally standing room only as we had run out of chairs, but nobody seemed to mind.
The 60 minute talk was a masterclass of how to solve the inherent acoustic limitations of a classical Spanish guitar by clever design and choice of materials, to produce instruments which have won plaudits all over the world for their excellence. The presentation was interspersed with short video clips of his instruments being tested and played by leading soloists, whose appreciation of the instruments was very unambiguous.
After the talk some in the hall took the chance to ask questions and examine the samples David brought with him, showing the painstaking attention to every minute detail of the design and choice of materials which make his instruments so special. And they are intrinsically beautiful objects in their own right.
A memorable evening which none of the audience were in a hurry to leave.
