The 6th June 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when Allied forces mounted the largest amphibious invasion the world has ever witnessed.

D-Day 80th anniversary logoIn 1944 Operation Overlord saw around 4,000 ships and landing craft set down about 132,500 troops on five Normandy beaches in an action that would bring about the liberation of north-west Europe from Nazi occupation.

The bravery and sacrifice of those people in securing the peace and freedom we enjoy today will be observed by the lighting of beacons around the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories. Casterton parish council is planning to join those communities lighting a beacon on 6th June in celebration of the ‘light of peace’ that emerged out of the darkness of war.

More details about the lighting of the beacon will be posted in due course.

The parish council would like to hear from village residents with suggestions for other ways in which Casterton can commemorate this anniversary. The official guide may give some ideas – the guide can be downloaded from www.d-day80beacons.co.uk/

If you have an idea or would like to help with organising an event, please comment below – the parish council will consider all suggestions.
